ReVITalize at Salt Spa now offers tirzepatide injections for weight loss.
Created as a drug to manage Type 2 diabetes, tirzepatide works by targeting hormones that help maintain healthy blood sugar levels and trigger the “I’m full” feeling when we eat. In November, the U.S. Drug and Food Administration approved tirzepatide for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or who are overweight. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 1 in 3 adults are overweight, and 2 in 5 are considered obese. Being overweight or obese increases your risk for many health problems, from type 2 diabetes and heart disease to certain cancers and sleep or breathing problems.
Dr. John Sharretts – Director of the Division of Diabetes, Lipid Disorders, and Obesity in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research – explained the reason for the FDA’s recent approval:
“Obesity and [being] overweight are serious conditions that can be associated with some of the leading causes of death such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes … today’s approval addresses an unmet medical need.”
A real-world study published in Nature Medicine showed significant weight loss among obese or overweight patients taking tirzepatide when combined with additional lifestyle changes such as improved nutrition and exercise habits. Patients lost on average 27% of their body weight, or about 64 pounds, during the study.
Tirzepatide or Semaglutide?
Both injections for weight loss mimic the hunger-regulating hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) that gives you the “I’m full” feeling. Tirzepatide, however, also mimics a second hormone in the gut known as GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). Early studies suggest that this dual action in tirzepatide might be more effective than semaglutide and with fewer side effects. But as Healthline cautions, it might be too early to tell. Both medications are quite effective at contributing to weight loss, especially when combined with lifestyle changes such as nutrition and exercise.
