How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery

How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery

Home | Blog | Breast Augmentation | How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed. With an experienced plastic surgeon like Galardi | Bowen Plastic Surgery, it is a safe procedure with great results.

Luckily, you won’t need to do much to prepare for your breast augmentation surgery. But the right preparations can make all the difference in improving your recovery.

Two to Four Weeks Before Surgery

First, if you smoke, you should quit as soon as possible, preferably weeks or months before your surgery. Smoking slows healing and can increase the risks associated with surgery like bleeding and scarring. If you take any recreational drugs, such as cocaine, or drink alcohol, you will also need to stop before your surgery.

Next, talk to your surgeon about the medicines you are taking. You won’t be able to take some medicines, like blood thinners or aspirin, for days leading up to surgery as they increase the risk for bleeding. Make sure you tell your doctor about all medicines you take, even vitamins, supplements, or herbs. Your doctor will let you know how to adjust your medicines leading up to your surgery.

You may also need to see your primary care physician to ensure you are healthy enough for surgery. Your primary care physician knows your health history best and can ensure that you don’t have any health issues that could make surgery risky. Your primary care physician may want to perform a physical exam and perform a few blood tests before surgery.

Don’t forget to ask for time off work as well. You may need up to a week off work.

The Week of Surgery

You will not be able to reach over your head for a while after your surgery, so you should move any items you need to lower places you can easily reach. It can be helpful to clean your home before surgery, arrange for any child or pet care during your recovery, and fill any prescriptions you have. You should also buy ice packs, gauze, and soft bras that open in the front for your recovery.

You’ll also need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from your surgery, as well as stay with you for 48 hours after surgery.
The night before your surgery, don’t eat or drink anything after midnight and try to get a good night’s sleep.

The Day of Surgery

On your surgery day, you can take a shower as normal, but don’t use any lotions or deodorant. Continue to avoid drinking and eating. Don’t wear contacts to the surgery center; wear glasses. You should also wear comfortable, baggy clothes that don’t require you to lift your arms over your head, like a button-up shirt.

Once you arrive at our certified surgery center, we will help guide you through the rest of the process.
