Dr. J. Byers Bowen understands that plastic and reconstructive surgery is highly personal. Dr. Bowen spends time getting to know each of his patients to understand their unique needs and goals, and is dedicated to providing high quality care with exceptional results. At Galardi | Bowen Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bowen specializes in cosmetic surgery of the face, breast, and body, including body contouring following massive weight loss; breast reconstruction; and treatment and reconstruction of skin cancers.
Education
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Bowen received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Davidson College. While at Davidson, Dr. Bowen was a Division-I athlete, playing four years of college football. Dr. Bowen earned his Doctor of Medicine from The University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, and completed his residency in General Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School. While at EVMS, Dr. Bowen was recognized for his excellent patient care, receiving the award for Intern of the Year and the L.D. Britt Resident Award for Excellence in Education and Mentorship. Dr. Bowen was selected to complete his fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and The James Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the preeminent Plastic Surgery training programs in the nation. Dr. Bowen’s innovative research in the field of reconstructive surgery for amputees has been published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and The Wall Street Journal.
Following fellowship, Dr. Bowen returned home to Hampton Roads to begin practice with friend and colleague, Dr. Nicholas Galardi. Dr. Bowen and Dr. Galardi completed General Surgery residency together at EVMS before each pursued additional training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Their years of friendship and partnership set the tone for what a patient can expect at Galardi | Bowen Plastic Surgery – a practice focused on caring for you and your unique needs and goals.
Personal Life
Dr. Bowen and his wife, Ann, live in Norfolk with their twins. When not in the operating room, Dr. Bowen enjoys spending time with his family, gardening, and wood-working. Dr. Bowen and his wife are members of First Presbyterian Church and supporters of the Team Drea Foundation – established by college friend Andrea Lytle Peet who was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 33 – as well as other causes local to Hampton Roads.
