Dr. Grossgold has special clinical interest in reconstructive urology, as well as in all aspects of men’s health and wellness to include hormone replacement, erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease treatment, and vasectomies. With a passion for global medicine, he leads several humanitarian surgical missions to underserved countries every year, and he is on the Board of Directors for two non-profit global surgical organizations based in Virginia.
Education
Dr. Erik T. Grossgold entered the naval service through NROTC at the University of Virginia in 1997. After commissioning in 2001, he began his medical training at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia in Richmond through the Health Professions Scholarship Program. Upon graduation in 2005, he began a general surgery internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, where he earned the general surgery and command intern of the year awards.
He transferred to the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, where he completed Naval Flight Surgeon training in June 2007. From 2007 to 2009, he served as flight surgeon for the Airborne Command Control and Logistics Wing at Naval Base Ventura County, CA. Dr. Grossgold next entered into urology residency training at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and graduated in June 2013. From 2013 to 2015, he served as the Urology Department Head at Naval Hospital Guam. During his tenure on Guam, he was the chair of the Medical Records Review Committee, and served as the command validating flight surgeon for aeromedical evacuations. He was accepted for full-time out-service fellowship training in 2015 and attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis for trauma and reconstructive urology.
After fellowship graduation in 2016, he was transferred back to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth as the command reconstructive urologist. At Portsmouth, he served as team leader for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Surgical Quality Learning Partnership, participating in numerous patient safety and surgical quality improvement projects. He was selected as the surgeon representative to the Navy Medicine East Transgender Care Team, and was the Chairman of the Medical Records Review Committee. He was the urology department head from 2018-2023 and has served as the Urology Product Line Lead for the Tidewater Market. In 2021, Dr. Grossgold was selected as the Urology Specialty Leader and Urology Consultant to the Navy Surgeon General.
Dr. Grossgold was confirmed as a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Urology in 2015. He is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society of Government Service Urologists, the Genitourinary Reconstructive Society, the Society of International Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, and the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He was the military representative to the American Urological Association Young Urologists Committee, and has authored numerous scientific journal articles and medical textbook chapters.
